About Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was established with the emergence of the Faculty of Science in 1957, and developed widely so that it became one of the largest departments of the college, so it moved to the new chemistry building in 1987. This new building is equipped with various modern laboratories, large amphitheaters, study and lecture halls that cover the needs of students in chemistry. In addition, the building has specialized laboratories such as biochemistry, spectroscopy and others.

The Department of Chemistry teaches chemical sciences to students of different years in the faculties of science, education, agriculture, medical preparatory schools and engineering, thus serving a large number of university students.

In order for the student to feel the importance of chemistry in life to the day, new courses with applied aspects have been included, namely industrial chemistry, biochemistry and environmental chemistry, in addition to the inclusion of many elective courses in various fields of chemistry (analytical - natural - inorganic - organic) to enable the student, in the last semesters, to specialize in one of the chemical fields that he tends to and deepen his application.

The department aims to graduate qualified and specialized batches in chemistry, where these batches in turn provide their expertise to serve the community in various fields such as industrial and agricultural research centers, new and renewable energies, biotechnologies, plastics and marine biology, and some bodies such as (Public Authority for Water, Environment Public Authority) and analysis laboratories in health and industrial centers, etc. As for the fields in which a graduate can work, there are many. The graduate can work in factories, laboratories and various chemical institutions, teach chemistry, or pursue study and research to higher levels. Due to the urgent need for graduate studies, the department opened postgraduate studies in 1973. The department granted a diploma degree in chemistry, provided that the diploma student passed the exams for a set of advanced courses in various branches of chemistry within a period of two years.

In 1983, the department began to grant a higher degree in chemistry, provided that the student of the higher degree passes the exams of a set of basic courses and the exams of another group of specialized courses corresponding to the branch that chooses. The graduate studies aim to develop the spirit of research and study of the student and train him on the method and methodology of scientific research and prepare specialists with high scientific levels and are able to meet the requirements of society and provide it with specialized technical frameworks.
